A dental crown is a cap placed over a tooth to restore its strength, shape, and appearance. It is often recommended for teeth that are decayed, cracked, weakened, or after a root canal. The procedure typically takes two visits.

Step 1: Initial Consultation & Tooth Preparation

1. Examination & X-Rays
• The dentist examines the affected tooth and takes X-rays to check the root and surrounding bone.
• If the tooth is severely decayed or infected, a root canal may be required before placing a crown.

2. Tooth Reshaping (Enamel Reduction)
• The tooth is reshaped to make room for the crown.
• If a large part of the tooth is missing (due to decay or damage), a filling material may be used to rebuild it.

3. Impressions & Shade Selection
• A digital scan or traditional mold of your tooth is taken to ensure the crown fits perfectly.
• The dentist selects a shade that closely matches your natural teeth for an aesthetically pleasing result.

4. Temporary Crown Placement
• A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being fabricated.
• The temporary crown is usually made of acrylic or composite material and is cemented with temporary adhesive.
• You should avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods to prevent dislodging the temporary crown.

Step 2: Crown Placement (Second Visit – 1-2 Weeks Later)
1. Removing the Temporary Crown
• The temporary crown is gently removed, and any adhesive is cleaned off the tooth.

2. Fitting & Adjustments
• The dentist checks the fit, shape, bite, and colour of the permanent crown before cementing it.
• Minor adjustments may be made to ensure a comfortable and natural bite.

3. Permanent Crown Bonding
• The crown is secured using strong dental cement or adhesive.
• A special light may be used to speed up the bonding process.

How Long Does a Crown Last?
With proper care, a dental crown can last 10-15 years or even longer. The lifespan depends on oral hygiene, eating habits, and routine dental care.
